Otome Game Review: Diabolik Lovers Haunted Dark Bridal

Intro: Kotomori Yui’s dad is sent by the church to Europe and he hands Yui over to some “relatives” at the famous “haunted mansion” where she meets 6 vampires who aren’t all that sparkly…

The game contains 3 parts per character: Dark, Maniac and Ecstacy — or 30 chapters per character and an additional epilogue. From the guides I used, it’s best to select all of the “love choices” so you can quickly unlock the Best End and then get the Do S & Do M over with to finally unlock the Heaven End.

I’ll be combining all the parts because you don’t want to read pages of text and I don’t want to type pages of text 😛

*Final thoughts below

2016-07-21-183947Rip EardrumsKanato:  Carries around a stuffed bear named Teddie that is… filled with the ashes of his dead mother. He has a very short temper and is infamously known for his fork scene, in which he proceeds to stab Yui with one for being “late” with his French toast. But things take a change when Kanato realizes that his mother’s (Cordelia) heart was put into Yui’s, he doesn’t need Teddie anymore when he can have both!

Yui tries to placate Kanato by answering with only what she believes he wants to hear but he sees through her and “punishes” her for that – as well as for talking to other guys… Eventually she succumbs to the pleasure she feels whenever he drinks her blood.

There were parts where he’s like I’ll help you clean or look at this flower but then twisted 2016-07-21-184008it into some BDSM scenario – but here’s where I felt a little weird about it. BDSM requires consent. Several times, Yui says STOP but he twists her words to make her say she enjoys it like wtaf sir.

Ultimately, I felt bad for him because of his awful upbringing with Cordelia – but then he’d go around and abuse someone else because of his tragic past and it didn’t sit right with me. Compared to Ayato, however, Kanato loved Yui.

2016-08-09-201228

Ayato: Finds it hilarious to pour hot wax on Yui and throw darts at her. Unlike Kanato, this guy tries to assault her, but thankfully Reiji walked in on time to stop it. He has an awful past but again this doesn’t allow you to treat others like dirt. A few times it seemed like he could be redeemed (like when he saved her from Kanato) but then he turns around and strangles her.

Cordelia is like one of those narcissistic reality tv women who needs to be #1. She hates Beatrice and is always trying to sabotage her. Which backfires tremendously because Cordelia never thought that the way she chose to raise her son would turn him into this selfish guy who wanted to be the best like no one ever was! And now her son hates her too.

tumblr_nnpv77x3z41tc1368o3_1280Laito: It kills me to see two of my biases voice irredeemable assholes. I did my best to focus on Hirakawa’s velvety voice but every time he said “Bitchchan” I just *sigh* Here’s the thing: He had sex with his mom.

So as you can imagine, the way things go down with Yui are really gross. I was hoping he was Do-M but NOPE gotta make him both at the same time! As such, I felt sick to my stomach because after he slept with Cordelia and she ran to him going “Save me! I need to have sex with Karl!” the poor guy broke.

Now he equates love with killing the person you love. Like the ultimate 告白。Yui tries to take her life when she realizes that Laito just wants Cordelia to take over her so he can kill her again… or smt? Things spiraled into having sex in front of mommy’s grave, violent sexual assaults, having his brides attack Yui and then deciding NOPE because seeing her covered in blood is so damn hot (ಠ_ಠ)

Excuse me while I scrub my brain from Laito. Hirakawa’s voice is too lovely for this.

tumblr_nne8ejvoo41tc1368o3_1280

WHY ARE YOU A LIE?!

Reiji: I saw the megane and thought there was a chance at a good route!!! It’s a trap. This douchebag is the biggest ass to ever be conceived and I doubt anyone will ever top this mega-douche-fedora-reddit-user.

Unlike the bros, who at the least had pasts that could illustrate why they were the way they are, Reiji has nothing to explain himself. A  tragic past is never an excuse to abuse someone, but the fact that Reiji didn’t have even that is why he has become the number 1 dick of all time.

His mom Beatrice preferred Shuu over him so in his anger he hired a vampire hunter to kill her but plot twist! She wanted to die all along! As you can imagine, Reiji was pissed because YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO SUFFER so guess what? He’s been working on a drug TO WAKE THE DEAD SO HE CAN KILL HER AGAIN LIKE WTAF?!

Plot twist: the vampire hunter was Yui’s dad, Richter – except he isn’t her real dad cuz she was some unwanted baby the stork flew in. Apparently she was just lying around because this is when Richter put Cordelia’s heart into Yui…

tumblr_nne8c4snbj1tc1368o3_1280After horrific “experiments” are done on Yui, Cordelia is done with Reiji’s shit and takes over Yui’s body. As if it couldn’t get any worse, we find out that Cordelia has been watching her own sons sleep with Yui… and also Reiji wants to marry Cordelia. WHAT.

His aniki, Karl, married Cordelia and she loves Karl. But Karl only wanted her powerful bloodline passed down to his children. So Reijii’s forever screwed over and he becomes Do-M for Cordelia and then plot twist 2: Cordelia’s own plan is the reason why Yui was brought to the mansion in the first place.

2016-08-09-201151Shuu: The oldest of the Sakamaki bros. He loves music and putting the least amount of effort into life, like Shikamaru from Naruto. When he makes it clear to Yui that he has no intention of turning her into a sack of blood, Yui gets her hopes up. If she can get on his good side he might help her escape!

She has to work hard to get him to even acknowledge her: saving him from drowning when he goes for a nap in the bath lol, getting him to attend classes, etc. and for someone who’s soooo lazy he certainly teases her a lot 😉

The one thing that pissed me off was there was a point where Shu left her on her own in the city and she didn’t escape! Oh well, she awakens as a super Do S when he asks her to lick his wounds (eww) and she discovers she enjoys the pained look on his face. To each their own, I suppose.

Shu was friends with a shota named Edgar but he was burned to death when Reiji set his village on fire. So now Shu has PTSD and when Yui’s cooking, he flips out when he sees the stove flame and kisses her. By this point, Yui’s all YOLO and they bang the next day.

Reiji’s gets upset and destroys the food she prepared for Shu. She tells him what happened and says “She wants to step on his head” which makes her aroused… I mean, good for you? Here is where Shu realizes he cares about Yui as a person and doesn’t want her to be hurt if she remains with him. HOLY SHIT IT TOOK 4 ROUTES JUST FOR SOME ACTUAL ROMANCE!

2016-08-09-201140His bro just couldn’t handle not being # 1 so he kills Yui in one route then Shu kills Reiji. He turns her into a vampire cuz somehow she survived the blow? He kills his cousins cuz he’s the ruler now and Yui is the Dark Queen.  In another end, Reiji and Shu end their lives when Shu finds a diary entry about how Reiji killed Edgar. In the last ending, there’s a portal in the forest so they were never in Japan to begin with. WUT. They move to Transylvania and live in peace.

Shu wasn’t an ass and didn’t want another human to get close to him because then his bro would kill her. But he fell in love with her anyway so it all worked out!

2016-08-09-201400Subaru: Youngest Sakamaki bro and a huge tsundere. He is one of the sweetest, most precious cinnamon roll angels in this entire game. While the others find it amusing when they hurt Yui by drinking her blood, Subaru immediately stops and tries to amend for what happened. Poor guy tries to act tough and all but the moment he notices Yui’s uncomfortable or in pain he does everything he can to make the situation better.

Shu has some of the more suggestive lines, but Subaru don’t know wtf he’s doing. Because of this it’s so hilarious when he gets flustered over everything and he tries to apologize:

2016-08-09-182125

In other words, to apologize, I’ll show you my body.

Unlike every other guy with mommy issues, Subaru has daddy issues, which I can relate to lmao. His mom Christa was sadly forced to be Karl’s bride and was forced to have his child. She’s constantly having flashbacks so the poor woman begs her child to kill her with a silver knife. It got so bad that I had to honestly lower the volume because of the poor woman screaming at Subaru to kill her – but he could never bring himself to do it.

As you can imagine, that’s a lot of shit for a child to deal with. So in order to release all of that, he violently smashes stuff. Thankfully, he’s a cinnamon roll and doesn’t hurt Yui and tbh, other than Shu, Subaru was the only one who actually cared about Yui. So after they realize they both like each other and bang in his coffin, he sets off to free his mother like he should’ve done a looooong ass time ago.

End 1: After killing Christa he’s like omg we gotta go… but you 2016-08-09-201345know, it’s cool when your cousins killed Cordelia and all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ End 2: Subaru kills Christa but he’s upset that he can’t face his dad so Yui says if he drinks his blood he’ll go super saiyan. He tells her he’s already over 9000 and that he’ll drink from no one else. End 3: He dies so Yui goes berserk because Cordelia’s like TIME TO RISE MUWHAHAHA but because Subaru wouldn’t want that to happen she takes her own life.  I’ve a huge bias for tsunderes so I enjoyed this guy’s route more than Shu’s.

Final Thoughts:

diabolik-lovers-otome-games-32523819-745-932

I’d never have played this if not for my friend in Japan who sent it to me for my B-day. She loves this game so I decided why not? This isn’t for those looking for romance. Just like Amnesia, the main plot of this is darker and focused on other things. Where this differs from most otoge is that it tries to implement elements of BDSM. The problem is that BDSM requires consent. Fiction and reality are separate things and you’re allowed to enjoy things. I just didn’t like how certain elements were written (like the BDSM) and so I had issues with it. Ultimately, this game just wasn’t for me. There were some good parts though, like Shuu, Subaru and Yui.

I’ll talk about the positives first:

Heroine: Yui! Holy crap girl! The anime is a lie. I couldn’t finish the show because this poor girl doesn’t stick up for herself but in the game she does. I’m surprised at how daring she was. I could never. She is incredibly brave and does things I would be too scared to do in her situation. Though there are also plenty of times where she’s so terrified that she resorts to self-preservation and cowers, which is totally understandable. Once she realized she liked getting her blood sucked, though, something awakens in her.

3f3e8b9f5630e2d96acedb21705296c21374200652_full

Here’s where the problems start. The first and most important one being that I don’t self-insert in otome games. Everyone is allowed to play otome games the way they like. I just happen to enjoy otoge when I’m viewing the game from an outside perspective. It’s like reading Y/N fics. There’s something about the second POV that I don’t gel with, so similarly, I can’t do that with otoge. I’d also never want to be in Yui’s situation, but to each their own. Personally, I’ve never been bitten by a sexy vampire, but constantly reading about how “painful” and “horrible” it felt is not for me. Yui later starts to derive pleasure from that, so good for her.

So the only time I actually was like ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)‎  with the dummy mic was in Subaru and Shuu’s routes because that was the only time she wasn’t being stabbed/strangled/yelled at/sexually assaulted/etc… (Also, I didn’t realize this until going to therapy years later, but sexual assault is a HUGE trigger of mine, so you can imagine how it was playing this game and just becoming this shaking, horrified mess and not really understanding why I was reacting that way because I lacked the necessary words to express that)

Subaru and Shu: Tsundelicious and Moecake.

Art: Honestly, it’s beautiful.

Music: Haunting, gorgeous, and fits the game perfectly. Wasn’t a big fan of the ED song but liked the OP song because that right there will tell you that you’re not playing no fluffy otoge.

Cons: So now that I’ve been to therapy (for reasons unrelated to this game LMAO) and can articulate myself better many years later, my main problem is how this game was marketed to me by others. I was told this is an exploration of BDSM, and so when Yui was attacked, everything that happened to her was okay and that it was just part of BDSM. The problem is that for the majority of the routes, Yui isn’t consenting to any of this. She screams, begs, cries, for them to stop. She eventually becomes so used to their treatment that she unconsciously turns her pain into pleasure in order to survive. She’s trapped in a house of vampires and does what she can to please them in order to escape their torture but they still force themselves on her, experiment on her, etc. The exception would be Shu. He never attacks her so I was able to get behind the fact that she did enjoy it when he bit her and she loved him because she wasn’t forced to adapt to it. I also can get behind Subaru.

BDSM is all about consent and making sure the other person is willing. In a lot of dark romance, there’s no consent. That’s what you sign up for. Same with that dead dove tag on ao3 lmao. If you don’t like it, don’t click on it! As someone who had no idea that sexual assault and other things were triggers going into this game with the knowledge that it was just a fun exploration of kink… I felt completely blindsided, to be honest. I thought this was going to be an edgy vampire otome game and that’s it. That would’ve been cool, cuz I enjoyed the Black Wolves Saga a lot! I knew going into that game there were things I might not be comfortable with, but the game took its time to explore that and it was so well done that I ended up really liking the game. Had I played Diabolik after when I was more informed about things, I don’t think I would’ve been as upset as I was when I first played this. Does this make sense? I feel like I’m rambling. All this to say that everyone can enjoy what they want to, I’m not judging you for it. I just wish I’d been warned that there were rape scenes… That would’ve been nice lmao.

At the end of the day, this game wasn’t a fun time for me. If it’s something you enjoy, I’m happy for you! Don’t let me yuck your yum. I wish I could be part of this, but this just had way too many triggers for me so I’ll not be touching the rest of this franchise. So, if you want play this game but don’t know Japanese, don’t worry! There’s a fan translation you can use! Go find it if you want but remember you gotta buy a copy of the game first, which you can do CDJapan. If you use my link you can help support my blog. I sincerely appreciate it. It’s been a wild few years coming back to this review only to cringe and die reading it because Idk how anyone understood the keyboard smashing I was doing. I sure hope I’m more articulate now lmao. Anyway! I don’t hate this game. I had a bad time playing it, sure, but that may not be your experience.  Just look up the trigger warnings in case you need them.

Want a darker otoge with romance? Give Nameless or Sweet Fuse a try. I also recommend Amnesia Memories.

Or if you want super depressing get Hakuoki! ^^

Have you played this? Did you watch the anime? What did you think? Any recommendations?

If you like what you see please follow or share! Thank you!

Congrats on finishing the game! I’ve started the game a long time ago, but picked Laito as the first guy. I couldn’t get past him calling me Bitch-chan all the time, so I kinda…gave up on the game. Might pick it up sometime soon just for Shu and Subaru though! I’ve been hearing everywhere that they’re the saving graces of this game.

Hallelujah! As someone who bumped into the anime, I was told that the games handled the characters better.

Sad to see that wasn’t exactly the case. However, I will say that when I did watch the anime I was so angry I wanted to burn my tv.

When I talked about it with fandom members though I didn’t get backlash. Hell, diehard fans actually AGREED with me!

Also! I am convinced Laito McRaperson mcraped Yui in the anime. :/

        CandieCane,

I’m so glad you had a good experience with the fandom! I wish more people did so this is great to hear 🙂 If you are ever curious and want to play it, the game has been translated into English on wiki but you do have to purchase a copy of the game. I hope you have a great day and thanks so much for stopping by!

I don’t get why this series is one of the most requested in English. I mean, it has name recognition, but do a little research and find something that sounds good and appeals to a wide audience. I just have a feeling, if this was licensed, this is going to be one of those cases of requestor’s remorse (is that a thing?) and then people will complain about how dark and creepy it is. So many other titles I’d rather play.

I agree Krystallina. The only ones who won’t bash this game is the fandom and some people who found the different aspects unique.
So many reviewers would have a lot to say about this game and it wouldn’t be a positive thing.
And then the whole world will see that and go “So that’s what otome games are then? Abusive shit?”
I really hope this doesn’t get picked up for localization.

I agree too. I’m afraid(and i’m sure rejet is too) that if DL gets brought over it might get a lot of backlash that it might affect any other games with such elements getting ported over. It happened before, it can happen again.

        Hi, crystaliterose!
Yeah, that’s what I’m really worried about. I can understand that there are a lot of people out there who are curious about the game and even some who are curious about otoge but if this gets released, I can only imagine how pissed off the Dialover fandom is going to be.
Reviewers are going to be pointing out these grievous flaws and it’s going to spark a rabid fandom war and we might never get another otoge in English….at least not for a while.

Yeah, they might as well shoot themselves in the foot with regards to bringing over rejet games(even the okay ones!). That’s why i was so pissed with the petitions asking for it, and even tweeting rejet’s twitter begging for it(please just don’t)

Haha, that was BAD. Which makes me real worried for the rest coming over…since i’m quite anal over speech context and characterisation. I was so disappointed at Barkuouki too wwwww

Yeah, it just sounds really weird. Granted honorifics are hard to localize as compared to our “Mr and Ms”, but I’m sure there’s a way around it. Like the importance of how “surname-san” moves to calling by first name, it’s odd in English unless you understand the concept of the social bubble in Jp but I digress…anyway, even though I will never touch localized games, I at least want those who will buy to get a fair and accurate experience.

I’ve played a few incarnations, actually liked it(mainly the characterisation, not so much the plot), but am critical enough of it not to recommend it. The fandom seems to put it on such a pedestal and their behavior can make me sick to the stomach. Thanks for an good review, one that can objectively review its good and bad points yet be civil and polite about both.

Thank you, crystaliterose, for being so kind and openminded. I can agree with you that I did like the characterization. It’s dark and delves into the psychology of the most twisted characters. It’s different.
But like you said, the fandom is unfortunately putting this too high up to acknowledge any flaws it has and alienating potential fans.
Thanks so much for reading and I hope you have a good day! ^^

    Congrats on finishing the game!

Uh yeah…I wouldn’t touch the second game. Just from experience. I haven’t even finished it yet because I need to take (long) breaks from it but they took things very far in that game; to an area I did not like. Which is a shame because the Mukamis are kind of interesting…but the routes just sucked. I didn’t love the first game but I liked the psychology aspect of it enough that I wanted to play more of the series but…it was a mistake to purchase more of the games before playing through the earlier ones because I’m not sure if I’ll ever play them all so they’re just sitting on my shelf as I try to finish up the second game (I think I have…the first four games?). Ironically I think I did the harder to sit through routes already but I just haven’t had the motivation to continue…

Ouch, sounds like my friend was right on the mark then.
I agree. I’m interested in the psychology of the characters, kind of like with Nameless and Amnesia, but obviously those two were much more fun and redeemable.
Oh lol that stinks. Well now you know what you like then? If you ever do decide to pick up the game again I hope somehow it’s a better experience rofl but tbh, even tho Subaru and Shu were much better, they still didn’t make the game for me.

Yeah, I believe so….I wanted to like the game because the Mukamis but yeah…it’s just too much. More fool me for investing more in the series at the time when I was so behind in my playing. I naively thought that they wouldn’t make more games after the fourth one hahahahaha

Amnesia is still a series I really like but I haven’t played Nameless yet. I think I played the trial but I didn’t actually get the whole game yet since I have so much on the backlog. Was that the Korean one from Cheritz?

Thanks, friend. I honestly just want to get through it. I’m slowly trying to clean up all my unfinished games but it’s a slow process. More Blood is being juggled next to Amnesia World as I figure which one I want to tackle next but I also have new games I’m planning on starting so…whenever that is I guess I can update you? Although I’m not sure my opinion will change much honestly…

Congrats on finishing it, 30 chapters per guy is huge! 🎆🎇🎉🎊
Man I’ve heard so much about this game (from both sides) and seen so much shitstorm, I decided to just sit in the fence. I’ll admit you made me kinda curious about it now (^_^;)
Not sure it’s enough to try it anytime soon tho, I value my sanity a lot (⌒_⌒;)
I’ve heard a lot of good about Subaru&Shu, but I wonder if it’s enough to make up for the other dudes. I’ve heard some are really extreme. But I won’t judge until I play.
I also don’t think we can judge the game by the anime, which I haven’t watched yet, but do agree with you if she didn’t agree/consent to it then it’s abuse, no matter what latter on she accepts. Anyone would accept if it’d mean hurting less, it’s how abuse victims act.
You say the second game is even worse? 😱 Wow, now I’m curious how much worse it can get, but at the same time I do not want to know (´・_・`)
I applaud you for finishing it, and actually being very neutral about it, while still being logical with your feelings/thoughts about it, I know how hard that can be! 👏👏👏

Tbh, I can’t recommend this game if you’re just okay with Subaru and Shu because the other routes are disgusting-especially Laito’s.
I can see why some fans like it-it’s a darker game, there’s a dummy head mic, and I guess for some it turns them on??? Lol, but considering we both have unfortunately dealt with scary situations before, I don’t think you’d enjoy this game either. However, who knows? You might.
This game has so many triggers so keep that in mind. Though it’s not R18 it certainly doesn’t hold back with implied rape and situations that don’t show anything.
Thanks again for reading and honestly I didn’t like this game and I didn’t like how Yui was treated. The 2 neutral routes weren’t worth the $ my friend spent on this for my B-day, though I do appreciate the sentiment from her, and I finally played it rofl.

Yeah, considering my allergy to abuse (mental or physical) I might hate it, really. I guess I have a M side that still would like to try it, but at the same time…◔_◔
I’ll confess why I didn’t like Ikki in Amnesia was what I perceived as forcefulness & also that some ends he got rape-y (’益’)
Poor Yui, she and some other heroines really need a retreat for abused, going out on dates with cute girls, eating tasty things and buying clothes, she really deserves it ༶ඬ༝ඬ༶
At least your friend did it with good intentions, and now you can further say what you like and don’t like ٩(●ᴗ●)۶

I try to stay far away from fandoms as much as I can, so I haven’t seen how bad they’re or can be, and truthfully don’t want to know if they’re vicious. Not gonna talk about what I haven’t played or seen, but I’m sure there’s nice people in the fandom too (´w`*)
TBH, there’s fantasies and then there’s reality, and we can totally put both aside in terms of media. But, sometimes we still do get a toll from it (´エ`;)

Guess you got through it! Although I really hope your friend doesn’t send you the continuation to play…. I really loved your criticism of the characters, even the ones I love a lot, and that was pretty hilarious. I can totally understand all the hate there. Despite being a huge fan, I never want this game to be localised due to the massive controversy it’s going to get if its done, and I don’t want to think about it.

However, being in Rejet hell has made Hirarin’s ero lines such as Laito have a special place in my heart now. ლ(๏‿๏ ◝ლ)

Pretty sure it’s like a right of passage for everyone who reviews this game to get harassment and death threats – to perfectly fit the theme of abuse! 😂

Jokes aside, sadly Kanato got worse in More Fanfiction and they made Subaru even MORE Tsun so nothing to look forward to. That said from what I heard all the other games/FDs they mad everyone sweet babycakes and constantly change the characters to fit what the “fans” want…so honestly who even knows what anyone’s personality is anymore. Reiji turned into a moeblob in More Blood so yea lol.

You’re probably better off stopping here and not bothering with the other games. I was pretty much done after MB.

Haha omg right? I’ve already gotten anonymous death threat on tumblr and DM’s on twitter. Pretty hilarious, really lol.
Damn….so they really did turn to writing for the fans then?
Thanks so much for reading, Hinano and don’t worry-I don’t plan on ever playing the other games 😛

ah ah don’t worry all fan are not like this! but i can understand you!! a lot are just so… stupid! in france it’s like that and more bad xD
lot of girls like diabolik lovers without playing at the game! just with the anime version… but omg the anime is just a big shit… i just watch 6 ep of the 1 season and can’t continue cause it’s was just so bad… for teenagers who need sexe and strange thing! for the second season i just watch 1 ep… i stop cause the design was so bad and story as usual a big shit xD.

i play at few games of diabolik lovers and i just like play for mukami!! (yuma!!) cause mukami characters are just a little better! there are not relate by blood but they look more like family than sakamaki >__<

yui is just so stupid… i play with carla another new characters… and he was… he had principe all along and just when it's finish he throw everything like 180° just for yui and one chapter before he was like human are shit and not strong… and after ohhh human are interesting… well guy… whyyyyyyyyy you change so quickly at the end xD

      Hi dragonise!
Haha so you’re from France? Awesome!
Yeah the anime was terrible and it’s so funny to see so many “fans” haven’t played the game but act like it’s their life.
I heard the Mukami’s are better so that’s good to know! ^^
Thanks so much for reading and it’s so good to see that there are some decent fans haha

Hey, glad to see you made it through the game (≧∇≦)/ Yes, honestly I personally found Shu’s route to be the best (cos for some reason I never felt like Kondo really fits Subaru’s chara??). Guess this is why Shu, followed by Subaru always tops the character rankings.

I’m actually a huge fan of the series. I’ve played every single game, bought multiple books, CDs and goods related to this, and while it isn’t the best, sweetest otoge out there, I feel there’s a lot of excessive drama surrounding it too. Fans who get overly-defensive for the charas, and also haters who constantly spill shit about the series, although there’s probably more of the former. I just want to say that whatever pleasure or love as implied, it is exaggerated and it is fantasy. Please don’t take it too hard either :/ I’m sorry some fans take it too far and can’t clearly draw the line, but a lot of things in DL make it a dark but really interesting game for me, and it sucks to see fans making things shit for others.

Anyway, while the second game was bad (it’s definitely the worse game of the franchise), the 3rd game (Vandead Carnival) is a lot more fun! There’s a lot more dating, better pacing and the mini-games are cute too. A lot of people stop after the 2nd game because it’s bad, but VC is really pretty enjoyable. Also, 100% skip the anime (and stage play)~ don’t think anyone that isn’t a hardcore fan should ever watch those haha.

      Hi El!
Oh that’s cool! I’m so glad my moecakes got the better rankings XD
I can def see why a lot of people like this series-it’s diff and mature but like you said, the fans are def insane over this. I don’t agree with the huge hate that some people give this series because they’re just doing that to shit on the fans, but the fans also are doing the same to those who don’t like the games -_-
I’m glad you enjoy the franchise and that VC is better but I don’t see myself playing any more of this series.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read and comment! ^^

Hello again, leaf 😀 after a busy school life, finally managed to sneak n read a post or two from the otome community. (God I missed so much news :’)). I agree about the game has so much twisted n abusive love story (isn’t love? Nah) n Shu n Subaru is really the angels of the game.

I mean, Ayato is somewhat understandable since his childhood was taken by him so I can relate the oresama thing. Kanato… Was weird af. My friend played him n liked him very much even though I hate him. But in other DL games, he was a lot better. I absolutely hate Laito (I mean yeah he was raped by his mom n became a hentai bastard but it just doesnt *click* with me) n Reiji, whom i refer as megane bastard, is the jerkface among the bros.

Subaru is my fav n I really like him since he is always so sweet n really cares for yui from the start ❤ n Shu is like the diamond in the game bcause he has the most pure heart among the bros (both him n subaru are actually the pure bunch) I have played the other DL games n my all time fav will always be Subaru n Shu..

The DL fanbase in my country is strong n I'm suprised the fact that Singapore n Indonesia is REALLY strong. I just had a slight argument with a Singaporean DL fangirl about Kanato (about Cordelia ashes n how he burn her and stuff into Teddy) and she kinda… Yells? Saying that I dont understand Kanato and his childhood. I just ended up saying "k" n left. I mean they need to calm their (tits- how Malaysian n Singaporean way of saying things *dirty jokes imply here, sorry not sorry) down. I mean there are things that should n shouldn't stand up. Sorry for the tl;dr text n happy one year anniversary for the blog 😀 hope to see more of yr reviews soon since everything you type is relatable af.

Hi Reare!! I was wondering where you went haha so good to see you again! I hope school is going well for you!
And yep, there were a ton of new announcements recently so I hope you enjoy finding out the exciting news!
Yea I can agree. I did like some of the characters but the game was too much. Haha “megane bastard” omg he is one!!
Ouch that stinks. Those fans are just really immature. And don’t worry-I didn’t think I’d be using crass language but what do you know haha, I guess it’s easier to do so online personally. So feel free to say whatever you wish! I don’t mind at all 🙂
And np don’t worry at all I love reading everyone’s comments and thank you soooo much!
Awww Reare you are way too kind! I shall do my best! Thank you so much and good luck with school! ^^

        Hi, crystaliterose!
I didn’t know how else to contact you but my brother was messing with my computer and he said he deleted your comment on my Motivation for Japanese post. I’m so sorry about that and he was sorry too.
        I apologize for the inconvenience.

Yeah, even I’m surprised but then again… jpop, kpop, otome, anime and other bunch of east asian entertainment industry had already spread the HUGE vibe years ago I’m not really surprised, only about 10% lol.

I didn’t know how to react on how strong the DL fan base there, tbh. I mean, I live in Malaysia but not KL so I didn’t really know how strong the fan base in Malaysia until I step foot in KL during an animax festival or something a few years back (prob 2014 or 2013) and just recently I went to Universal World in Sentosa with my friends and met one of my friends housemate (she studying there, in Nanyang) who is a dedicated and loyal fan girl (her words not mine) and we were talking about Haunted Dark Bridal and fall into an argument saying (her exact words) “Siao lah u, u tak paham perasaan Kanato, what do you know? Gila.” in a very rude matter.

But I didn’t take her seriously. XD

Haha, feels nice to know i’m not the only one thinking about that lol in my mind i was monologing “eiiii buak perempuan ni….. nak saja tampar”. Sometimes, playing the underdog doesn’t make me happy, there are just some time that I really really wanted to rub my jlpt too, even though I’m NOT that fluent but hey at least I can understand japanese XD

I’m also dont like DiaLov because of the fandom. The only things I like is … they never change their personality :v There’s too much game that bad boy meet good girl and change but like, hell no, personality cant change that easily, especially to their kind of past.

Your review was so on point!!! Ah, Shuu is my favorite character~ I haven’t played Subaru yet, though. I’ve heard a lot of good things about him. I only played Shuu’s route in MB as well, and it wasn’t that bad but he got screwed over in the bad ends.

I don’t really see the game as a romance… There’s just so much abuse, especially in the bad ends of course. Though I enjoyed Reiji’s Manservant ending because I felt like it was sweet revenge. >:D The tokuten drama CDs are also hilarious; if you ever get a chance to listen to them, the Vampire Juice and Karaoke ones are pretty funny but also feel a bit like fanfiction because the boys are so toned down.

The fandom is a bit scary, especially on Tumblr… I do my best to avoid rabid fangirls/boys…

    Thanks for the review!

Awww, thank you so much, Eleanor!
I don’t believe you missed anything with Shuu, because asking you to go and play his route just for him wasn’t worth it 😛 Still, know that he was of the few who treated Yui as a person haha
OOOO really? I thought the drama cds would be really….out there as well

I only like the tokutens; the official drama CDs (at least, the original ones that came out before the game) weren’t that great, nor am I a fan of the “Versus” series. There’s one CD where the characters switch bodies due to falling down (stairs I think?) so Yui tries to switch them back using a hammer XD
