The Left Door:

Ritsuka wishes her brother were here in times like these. Well, it’s not like she can expect him to just show up at the perfect moment. But who else can she rely on — ”You’re quite intriguing, Tachibana Ritsuka.”  Why did she remember the President’s words? She doesn’t need to rely on someone like him. She doesn’t have to go overboard, either. She just has to do what she can in this situation. Ritsuka continues to try and resist, demanding Jek let her go.

”You just don’t know when to give up, do you, little girl,” he says. Doesn’t she get it? Trying to get away is pointless. It’s not! she retorts. She can’t give up! “Hey, Ritsuka!?” She startles. She knows this voice. It’s Lindo’s. “Bastard! What are you doing to her? Get your hands off Ritsuka!” B-brother… Oh dear, says Jek. His timing is impeccable. Actually, he has something to ask him. How about he come with them? Lindo says he’s the one with the questions, and demands he let go of Ritsuka this instant or *he’s going to break that arm of his.

My, my, what an aggressive older brother, Jek sneers. Lindo asks her if she’s alright. He’s going to get her out of this in a second. Jek glares at Lindo. Hmph, fine then. If he’s not going to do obey him, then he’ll make him. Get ready. The sound of static rips through the air, and Jek flinches. What’s this sensation? Rem calmly walks up to them, and crosses his arms. “What are going to do with her?” he asks.

What? The President is here? Ritsuka balks. Jek seems to recognize him. “You…!” “Did you not hear me?” Rem asks. “I asked you what you’re planning on doing with her.” Jek says he doesn’t need to answer to him. This little girl is his. Rem asks if he thinks he can do whatever he pleases. If he can’t understand what he’s saying, then — Rem suddenly appears at Jek’s side, startling him — he’ll make his body understand. He punches Jek, hard. His grip on Ritsuka’s arm slackens. She has to run, now! But she trips over her own feet in her attempt to flee and starts to fall.

Rem is suddenly at her side to catch her. “Are you alright, Tachibana Ritsuka?” The President saved her? “Th-thank you very much…” she says. He asks her to step back for a moment because it’s dangerous. B-but… “Ritsuka, come here!” Lindo hisses, pulling her toward him. “It’s alright now,” he says. They’ll let him handle the rest. Lindo draws her closer to his chest, and she protests. She can’t see a thing! ”…I’m not going easy on you,” Rem says.

Jek tells him to shut his mouth and rushes at him. Rem calls him naive, and then there’s the sound of something cracking. Jek grunts in pain. Because the game doesn’t describe any of this battle, we have to infer from sound effects alone 😂. It sounds like Rem kicks Jek several times in a row. Ritsuka also has no idea what’s happening and she tries to tell Lindo, but he tells her to stay quiet. She doesn’t need to see this. Another kick connects with Jek, and he chokes. *He even broke his nail! He’s a despicable monster!

If he has time to blab, then — Rem strikes again, and Jek stumbles back with a cry, gasping for air. “It’s time I checkmate,” Rem says. Jek sucks in a shaky breath. He’s going to have to call it quits today. But next time for sure, he’s going to get her. Jek disappears and Rem snorts. It’s gone quiet all of a sudden? Ritsuka notes. Everything’s fine now, Ritsuka, says Lindo. He lets go of her and she looks around the area. That man is gone. Did he escape? Oh thank God, she sighs.

“Are you alright?” Rem asks her. “President… Yes. Um, Thank you very much for your help…” It was nothing, he says. Lindo is silent, prompting Rem to ask her who he is. Oh, he’s her older brother. Ritsuka turns to Lindo and tells him that this is her school’s Student Council President. She trails off. “Kaginuki Rem,” the President tells him. Lindo pauses. He’ll thank him for saving his sister, but he doesn’t want him to involve himself with her ever again.

Brother!? Why would he say something like that to him? He just saved her life! Rem says he doesn’t care, though he’d like to know what happened here. Ritsuka gasps. Oh, that’s right! Mom! She turns to Lindo and says that mom was abducted. What!? That man named Jek and his accomplices took her. They broke into the house too. They have to call the cops! Rem tells her to leave that to him. As for her mother, he can help her with that.

“That’s completely unnecessary. I thought I asked you not to concern yourself with her.” Ritsuka tells Lindo he doesn’t have to talk to him like that. But Lindo changes the subject and asks her to go inside the house. They’ll talk later. But… Don’t worry, Lindo says. This is a family matter. Come on, Ritsuka. He grabs her hand and his grip tightens. Ritsuka grimaces, but turns to Rem anyway. “Um. President. Thank you so much. Really.”

Rem says she can come to him whenever she needs something. He’ll be waiting for her in the third library. Lindo takes a breath, before dragging her into the house with him and closing the door behind them. Rem stares after them. It looks like things have gotten complicated, he murmurs.

✞———————❖———————✞

Ritsuka is sitting quietly on her bed when Lindo comes in with some chamomile tea. She must be exhausted after recounting everything that had happened. Ritsuka thanks him for the drink. He worriedly asks if she’s alright. Yeah, she’s calmed down a little. She’s… fine now. “Liar.” So much happened today. She must be pretty confused about it all. She doesn’t need to force herself to smile. Ritsuka murmurs his name. He turns away from her, his face twisted with regret.

“…I’m sorry. If I’d been here sooner, none of this would’ve…” Ritsuka says he has nothing to be sorry for. She was right here and yet she couldn’t do anything. Well of course she couldn’t have, Lindo says. He’s just glad she’s safe. But mom was…! “Mom will be fine. She’s going to come back safe and sound… Trust me.” Okay, she mumbles. How odd… She feels like everything is going to be alright when he says that. Oh, right. He was going to give her this. Lindo says it was lying on the living room floor. He already fixed the chain for her.

She thought the men had stolen her pendant… She thinks back to this morning, when her mom replaced the herb for her. “And there you go. With this, you’ll have good luck this week too.” Mom! Ritsuka sobs. Lindo sits down beside her and places a hand on her head. “It must have been rough for you…” he says. Lindo encourages her to cry all her tears out because she’ll feel better that way. She did so well all by herself. Ritsuka continues to sob. “I’ll be with you from now on. I’ll never let you be in danger again.”

2021-04-30-165950

Don’t worry, Ritsuka, he says. Her brother’s hand is so warm. That’s probably why she ends up crying harder.

✞———————❖———————✞

Lindo asks if the herb tea was any good. Yes, it was delicious, she says. It practically spread through her entire body. Lindo suggests she go to sleep because she must be exhausted. Oh, wait. Can’t they talk for a little while? Ritsuka asks. Well, he doesn’t mind but… shouldn’t she get some rest? No, she’s okay now. There’s actually something she’d like to discuss with him. Okay, that’s fine by him if she’s up for it. And with that, Ritsuka begins to talk.

✞———————❖———————✞

The grimoire… Lindo says. That Jek guy mentioned it, Ritsuka tells him. He seemed very interested in it. A grimoire’s a book of magic, isn’t it? She feels like grandpa said so. And this Jek fellow… he asked her where the grimoire was? Lindo asks. Yeah… but why would he ask her? She doesn’t know anything about that. Lindo looks away from her and goes silent. Ritsuka asks him what’s wrong. No, it’s… he trails off, only to fix her with a serious look. He understands the situation. However, this isn’t something she should concern herself with. “And you can’t tell anyone about the grimoire.”

Um… why not? She can’t tell anyone, no matter what. Not the police, not her friends… no one. Understood? But what if it could be a clue to finding mom? That’s all the more reason why she can’t mention it. She could be put in danger all over again. Lindo says he’ll figure out something, so he’d like her to listen to him. Alright, she says. She understands what her brother is saying. If the reason for why she and mom were attacked was because of the grimoire, then… she could targeted again if she speaks about it. Still…

Lindo also demands she keep away from Kaginuki Rem. The President? Why does she have to stay away from him? He doesn’t need to give her a reason. “But I don’t understand. He saved my life today…” Lindo says he’s telling her this for her sake. That should be reason enough. That’s it for today. He’s going to go clean up the house. What? But… he only just got back home. Isn’t he tired? Lindo says it’s fine because he doesn’t want to make her cry again. “Good night, Ritsuka.” She thanks him, and says good night. The door closes behind him with a click.

Ritsuka thinks he looked rather strange. Well, of course he did. Their house was just broken into and their mom was abducted. Mom… Remembering the incident brings tears to her eyes, warping the familiar sight of her room. “I was right there… and I couldn’t do anything. I’m sorry, Mom… I’m so sorry.” Ritsuka breaks down again, pleading for her mother’s safety. That’s when a ringtone sounds out. Her phone? It’s from Azuna. Ritsuka picks up and her friend answers. Azuna apologizes and asks if now isn’t a good time.

Oh, why? Azuna says she doesn’t sound too well. Her voice is a little odd… Has she been crying? Ritsuka thought she could’ve played it off, but Azuna noticed right away. Ah, but that’s how she is. She picks up on those sort of things at times like this. Azuna says she doesn’t have to force herself to talk, but she can if she wants to. Ritsuka says her name, and cracks again. She apologizes for crying. It’s just, everything’s a mess right now and she doesn’t think she can actually talk about it.

Azuna gently says she doesn’t have to talk while she’s crying. She can take her time once she’s calmed down. Unable to stop, Ritsuka says she’s sorry again and again through her tears. Azuna says she doesn’t need to apologize. That’s what friends are for, right? “Azuna… Thank you…”

✞———————❖———————✞

Good morning, brother, Ritsuka says. Morning, he says. So she’s finally up. Yeah, she’s fine. That’s when she notices the house is all neat and tidy. Even the garden is almost clean again. Lindo did all of this on his own? Here, he says. He made scrambled eggs. It’s been a really long time since she’s had his home cooking. Lindo says he won’t hear anything about her not being hungry. She needs to eat well, especially in times like this. Yeah… he’s right. “Thank you for the meal.”

2021-05-02-134119

Mmm, it’s delicious. His cooking has gotten so much better since he went to England. Well, he was all by himself over there, he points out. Yeah, that’s true. Ritsuka had thought it was rather lonely eating at a table meant for three. However, the warm food had helped to alleviate those feelings, little by little. Right. Her mom’s not going to come back just because she’s depressed. She has to think of what she can do. There has to be something she can do to help look for her. But what?

“Oh, by the way, Ritsuka.” Hm? What is it? Lindo says he’s going to be attending her school starting today. Everything necessary for the transfer has already been completed. “Oh, I see — Huh?” Lindo says they’ll head up to school together after breakfast. Sound good? Whaaaaaat!?

✞———————❖———————✞

The Right Door

“If you feel like you’re in danger, you should resist and escape. If you don’t, you’ll find that your wings have been plucked.” That’s right. No one’s going to rescue her just because she’s scared and waiting for help. But she can’t get her body to do what she wants it to, and she can’t shake off Jek’s hold on her arm. Is giving up all she can do?

Jek suddenly cries out in pain. What? A feather came flying at him!? “Who’s there!?” Jek yells, only to gasp as more and more rain down. Ritsuka screams. Why are there feathers!? She notices his grip on her arm has slackened. She needs to take her chance and run. Now! “Please move, feet!” Ritsuka prays. She takes off at a sprint. “You’re not getting away!” The feathers hail down on him again. That was a cheap trick! Jek roars. The perpetrator laughs and says he gave him no other choice. Another voice chimes in. Jek will be his opponent now that the girl’s run off.

✞———————❖———————✞

Ritsuka races toward the park, panting. Jek hasn’t pursued her, so she should be fine here, right? She somehow managed to escape, but…mom… “So this is where you went, Butterfly.” Ritsuka startles when someone steps in front of her. He’s…from the Student Council, she says, unable to recall his name. “Sogami Urie. You’ve already forgotten? You wound me.” More importantly… Urie steps closer and murmurs into her ear. Her sweet scent appears to have lured in a poisonous insect.

Well, he’s just glad to see she’s safe. She should leave the rest to those two and everything will be alright. Those two? she asks, when the sound of footsteps sound behind her. Urie says they’re here. “What happened to that pest?” he asks. “Do you even gotta ask?” Mage says. If a stir-fry like that tried to hit him, he’d be a goner. Shiki asks them not to forget that he did his best too, then laughs and calls them mean. These two are… Nanashiro and Natsumezaka from the Student Council? So then, the ‘stir-fry’ was the guy from before? Ritsuka thinks to herself. “Hey, relax. We chased that bastard off,” Mage tells her.

2021-04-30-005333

Shiki wanted to wait and watch until she’d been hurt a little before they intervened. Urie assures her that Shiki was the only one who wanted to watch. Besides, Rem would’ve reprimanded Shiki if he’d done that. Wait, so then… They rescued her? That’s what he just said, Mage snaps. Jeez. This is her fault cuz she got caught way too easily. Shiki tells him not to be absurd. She’s a helpless girl, completely different from Mage. Even if that weren’t the case, humans in general are weak creatures, Urie points out. Kind of like…butterflies.

Sooo… basically, they saved her? Ritsuka thinks to herself. “Um, thank you very much for your help. If you guys hadn’t been there, I’d beoh, that’s right. Mom!” What? Urie deadpans. They took her mom before her — that man and his colleagues did it! “…Your mother?” Shiki says in a stunned voice. Mage tsks. This is such a pain in the ass. Ritsuka tells them to hurry and call the police. If they don’t, her mom will —

“Hey, Ritsuka!!” Huh? It’s Lindo. He runs up to her. So she was here! Is she unharmed? “Brother!!” What’s he doing here? Oh? Shiki says. Lindo whirls around. “You guys are…” What a surprise, says Urie. He didn’t think any humans could get into this place. Oi, Shiki, Mage hisses. He thought he cleared everyone out of here. It was supposed to be empty, Shiki says. But oh well. Sometimes things don’t always work out.

Ritsuka, meanwhile, is busy asking her brother why he’s here. It was awful, he says. The house was a wreck when he arrived and both she and mom were gone. Thinking something must have had happened to them, he looked everywhere. Oh… so then he came back home… She’s unable to hold back her tears any longer. H-hey, what’s wrong? Why’s she crying? “Mom… was abducted by strange men!” What!? Ritsuka asks him what she should do. She couldn’t save her! Lindo tells her to calm down and asks if she’s alright. Is she hurt?

Ritsuka says she’s fine. Her upperclassmen saved her. Her upperclassmen? Lindo repeats. Shiki chuckles. It feels odd, being called that. Mage smirks at Lindo. He’s not the type the underclassmen yearn for, is he? And this would be the Butterfly’s older brother? Urie asks Ritsuka. Y-yes, she says. “I see… It’s nice to meet you. I’m Sogami Urie, a member of the Student Council. This is Nanashiro Mage and this is Natsumezaka Shiki.” Given the circumstances, the Student Council is willing to work with him if they can be of help. So… if he could tell them his name? “…We’re leaving, Ritsuka,” says Lindo. 😂

2021-04-30-160356

Oh? says Urie. Lindo tells Ritsuka he’ll listen to her story once they get home. Come on. Hey! Ritsuka calls after him. What’s with him all of a sudden? His face was kind of scary. She turns around to thank her upperclassmen. She’ll make sure to give them a proper thank you another time. “Come see us next time at school, Butterfly. Okay?” Urie says. She will! Thanks for saving her! With that, Ritsuka chases after Lindo. What a well-mannered butterfly, Urie remarks.

But that brother of hers seems to hate them, Shiki says. Guy was staring daggers at ’em, Mage angrily says. “Who the hell does he think he is?” Right, Urie agrees. And even if he hadn’t been, he thinks there’s a chance that he’s an arch-enemy of theirs. At any rate, her mother was abducted. It could fun if they take advantage of this, says Shiki. Speaking of, Mage pipes up, they may end up obtaining that thing they’re after way too soon. It’s kinda disappointing. Let’s head back for now, Urie says. Rem is eagerly awaiting their return. “Tachibana Ritsuka… Not bad. You truly are such a fascinating butterfly.”

✞———————❖———————✞

Back home, Ritsuka is sitting quietly on her bed when Lindo comes in with some chamomile tea. She must be exhausted after recounting everything that had happened. Ritsuka thanks him for the drink. Translation Notes

「早くその手を離せ!でないとその腕ごと。。。!」I’m pretty sure Lindo’s threatening to hurt Jek’s arm here, although I couldn’t find anything about what 腕ごと is.

「爪もかすらせないなんて、とんだ化け物ね」So Rem chipped/broke Jek’s nail?
