Intro: Sayori finds some gross-ass pendant and Hatsuhime’s ghost appears begging Sayori to save her life 150 years ago. Now Sayori’s living as Hatsuhime trying to survive an assassination attempt-but that’s okay cuz her guards are hot! And know way too many puns they shouldn’t know at all rofl. The routes start after Sayori is split up between the guards.
Final thoughts below
Yozaburo Shiranui: Yo shields Sayori from a bullet and Mon Mon stitches his wounds while he’s conscious. She wakes up to Yo crying for his mom. Sayori doesn’t know what to do so pretends she’s his mom to comfort him. He wakes up all you totally held my hand 😉
They’re nearly to the castle when Kasumimaru: gay-for-Harumoto, arrives and Mon Mon fights him. But Nobumasa-Harumoto’s bro-is waiting for them.
End 1: Sayori pretends to be Yo’s sis and he tells Nobusama Ohno lol that a witch lured them into her gingerbread house. The plan goes to shit when he tries to hunt down the witch. Yo kills him and gets Sayori back to her castle. Sayori’s pulled back to her world but can’t remember anything because the pendant fucking broke. Great, Sayori -_- Hatsuhime explains what happened and Yo leaves because it’s too painful to see her because Sayori isn’t the princess ಥ_ಥ
End 2: Sayori pretends to be his mom but they’re found out and Yo kills Nobumasa. Everything seems fine but Harumoto whisks her to the roof intending to nice boat themselves. Yo tries to stop him and Sayori shoves Harumoto off the roof and his fireworks sent him to his death.
Hatsu lol was in the pendant this whole time! She’s all FLY PRETTY BOY and they do so Spirited-Away-Style except they kiss unlike Haku and Chihiro then crash through a tree (*´艸`*)
Hatsu’s bodyswapped with Mon Mon who transfers into Sayori’s mind. Hatsu’s all Hell Yes because now that she’s a man she has privileges! Sayori is now the princess and stalks Yo during her wedding but he jumps her thinking she’s an enemy. She won’t marry a stranger cuz she loves Yo. She’s all can u get off ma boobs plz? and he goes NOPE and they kiss.
He asks if he can ❤ her for forever and they can kiss again (✿◕///ᵜ///◕) and it was a great route. Can we please applaud Morita because damn he was fantastic!
Jinnosuke Murasame: Never gets invited to parties and is horrible with women. He’s a peasant deredere who learned sword fighting through the POWER OF SOUL. When Hatsuhime’s been abducted, he’s all fuck YAS because she might reward him with a kiss.
After splitting up, Muneshige becomes depressed because she kissed Ittosai on the cheek “for motivation” and tries to get Jin to convince her to kiss him too. Idfk how but she gets bit by a snake and is all Oh my leg burns DERP and Jin makes her lie down to suck out the poison. He tries to make a tourniquet but the situation looks really suggestive so Mune’s like wtf are you doing to my 姫さまああああ?
Jin confesses he felt weird between the princess’s legs and he wanted a kiss so Mune falcon-punches him.
Mune stays behind to fight gay-for-Harumoto while Sayori and Jin roll around in the grass and he’s all let’s not go back. WUT. Since when? Nobumasa strolls in like that final boss you’ve been grinding and stuff to get to but HE’S JUST A LIE cuz lol sucka you still have one more guy to fight !
End 1: Sayori says she’s Jin’s wife and he freaks out lol smooth dude, and so he kills Nobumasa then leaves the country because their stations are too different.
End 2: Show down with Harumoto who ends up thanking Sayori for being kind wtf before he dies. Jin and Sayori warp back to her time and find each other in the streets and start making out in the middle of traffic. Takahashi sure did a great job with those sound effects if you know what I mean. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Tainojo Tsubaki: “Would you like to see my Mr. Elephant?” ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) was such a disappointment!! The only thing that happened during his route was him emoing about how women only loved him for his bishounen qualities and didn’t value his super otaku interests in UFOs and the paranormal.
End 1: They confess to each other and then Sayori’s pulled right back to her world -_-
End 2: Sayori somehow travels back to Bo’s world and he just KNOWS who she is the moment he goes home to find some stranger in his home because LOVE. Lamest route ever.
At least it was better than Suien in Nise no Chigiri cuz Bo was funny.
Ittosai Tatsunami: Megane-assassin with the worst life of the cast rofl. I didn’t think I’d like him tbh cuz he was some psychopath but after you get to know him better ( ˘ ³˘)♥
Poor guy’s dad was a douche who saw his son had some mad skillz with fighting so he gets the BRILLIANT IDEA to punch him, kick him, and abuse him because….well, idk. Make him stronger? しょうがないよ!His mom and sis left and he blames himself for causing them to leave so he doesn’t want to get close to anyone because they’ll just abandon him.
End 1: Sayori doesn’t follow his advice and just as they confess, she’s whisked back to her world while he’s breaking down because everyone he loves LEAVES HIM ಥ_ಥ
End 2: She follows his advice and Ittosai one-shots Harumoto and while she’s all soooo I’m not really Hatsuhime, the roof explodes. The guy stabs his sword into the brick wall and stops their fall like holy shiet. He’s all cool about it and then they totally make out in the middle of this fire and did I mention HE TORE THE FREAKING TOWER DOWN?
Looks like we got a badass over here. Oh and he’s also a tsundere soooooo yeah ❤
Hatsuhime’s all Yo I hate my world so you can stay here and Sayori’s so thirsty she agrees. The two go on a journey with frequent make out sessions 😉
Monzan Kadokura: Mon Mon is the pervy Monk who honestly was there for….well Idk. All of the characters provide some comedy (even Ittosai) so I was so confused because Mon Mon added nothing but a weird ending.
His younger bro was killed by a dude he bested in a competition and Mon Mon was framed for his murder. Before he offed himself a monk took him in.
End 1: Sayori returns to her world where she runs into Hatsuhime’s descendants. Every generation the children were named after her body guards…all so Sayori could read a letter Hatsuhime wrote her. Which makes no damn sense when in the other ending she has POWERS that could let her communicate with Sayori. Or bring her back. But no, gotta do this the hard way.
The only good this did was prove that Hatsuhime and Muneshige are canon. Like can we please talk about the glaring chemistry between these two?? And the fact that the writers totally butchered Muneshige’s route because HE LOVED HER BUT NO GOTTA LIE ABOUT DAT IN HIS ROUTE.
End 2: Sayori goes back but Hatsuhime’s all this world sucks so let’s bring Sayori back so we can switch places! They move to the New World where they set up a business and Mon Mon buys her a ring. It was pretty cute not gonna lie but WHY DID THEY FALL IN LOVE?!
I don’t fucking understand. One moment they’re travelling and the next Sayori trades her whole life to live with this moe-perv. I just can’t even.
Muneshige Tsukuba: Hatsuhime’s loyal vassal and these two are in total denial. They bicker, they care about each other, and everything feels soooo right with these two.
It was great until end 2…I mean don’t get me wrong, his route was great.
End 1: Muneshige locks himself in like a NEET because he can’t fall in love with the princess so Sayori goes to check on him. They confess their feelings and then she disappears.
End 2: Harumoto reveals that the reason he took her to the tower was because a prophet told him that if he took her with him, he could go to her world and rewrite history. But this prophet never shows up rofl so we have to assume that Sayori has all this power….and yet she can’t return to their world or hers when she wants?
Mune tells Sayori he never loved Hatsuhime cuz he wasn’t allowed to so when Sayori came to their world it was like BAM the FEELS so he falls in love with her. -_- NO. You loved Hatsuhime lol it was practically spelled out in the other routes dude. Quit your lying.
They marry and dear Lord in Heaven this man needs to keep his hair down. HNNNGGHH
Club Yo-Jin-Bo: Sayori is literally is dumped into Ouran Host Club with the guys who somehow made it to her world. It’s basically the closest we’ll ever get to a fandisc so it was great.
Final Thoughts:
Holy shit that was so fun! After Dialovers and Amnesia I seriously needed this game. Which only makes this new revelation that much worse because remember how I keep stressing that you need to support otoge and not STEAL?!!
Well, so many people pirated this game so Hirakemi was forced into bankruptcy which is a damn shame because this was such a great game. And this game is ridiculously OOP so good luck getting a physical copy.
You can still purchase the digital version but guys, GUYS stealing is bad. You might think one little “free game” won’t do anything bad….-_- Otome games are already a very niche market so already that’s one disadvantage.
I get it-these games are expensive but just save up. Otherwise another company might just burn.
Sound: Great. The music fit every vibe but personally I adored the character songs, my favorite being “Rejection Blues” by Jinnosuke. The romantic song was sooooo good. OP wasn’t my fav but I loved the good end ED song. And those kiss scenes sure worked well 😉
Apparently this was all recorded in a sound studio so damn. I honestly couldn’t tell because the seiyuu were so talented.
System: Timed choices, easy interface with no bugs. No skip-to-next-choice.
Art: Very good though the HANDS. And those yaoi faces… Because this is an old game, I did see some grain in the background but the characters were fine.
There’s not really a recommended route order because the plot is practically nonexistent, though if you want to save the most “spoilery” for last, then save Muneshige for last. I’d recommend doing the trio first on the cover and then go for either Mon Mon-to get him out of the way because WHAT WAS HIS ROUTE EVEN FOR? -or Ittosai’s.
I adored Yo’s route omg. Like it was so fluffy and just fun!! I loved it. Muneshige was fantastic as well and Ittosai you poor baby!!
My isssues with the game really come down to the fact that they replaced Hatsuhime with Sayori. Seriously, you get drawn into Hatsuhime’s POV because GURL IS BOSS (and is voiced) and then lol gotta go with damsel in distress.
Now I get it-different cultures and time period but none of the guys loved Hatsuhime until Sayori made her simmer down and become this docile, meek, traditional “ideal Japanese woman”?
Which sucks because Hatsuhime was vastly more interesting, entertaining, and kicked ass. Gurl ruled. Sayori’s not bad I guess. She’s not stupid but dear GAWD is she weak and timid and just boring. I’d prolly be the same way but damn did they beat you over the head with “subservient woman gets the man!”
These samurai shouldn’t know what Pokemon is so there really was no reason to replace Hatsuhime. Like WTAF?
It’s a shame Hirameki went under because a fandisc would’ve been great. We’d actually learn about Sayori and her harem. But thanks to pirating, we’ll never get that.
Overall, highly recommended if you want a hilarious game with romance and action that doesn’t take itself srly because you shouldn’t play this for plot. And tons of anime/games/etc puns because there are sooooo many of them.
Can be purchased here digitally
What did you think of Yo-Jin-Bo? Do you know any otoge focused on comedy and romance?
If you like what you see please follow or share! Thank you!
I remember seeing this game in an anime magazine 10 years ago. I had no idea what it was though lol and didn’t bother looking it up. I wish I did so maybe I could have gotten into otoge/VNs a long time ago. :’D
The game is actually developed by Two-Five; Hirameki localized it. I guess it wasn’t popular enough to get a fandisc.

Whoa no way! Haha I had no idea what otoge were either for the longest time even after Hakuoki was released :p
And thanks! I’ll have to change that though Hiramkei did go under. I believe Two-Five did as well but I’ll have to check that one.

What’s interesting is that, despite many ppl not knowing, this was actually the first otome game to be localized, and not Hakuoki lol.

Hello! 🙂
Thank you for your review of this game, I’d heard of it before but must admit that the older style of artwork kinda put me off, glad to hear it’s more fun than the many modern overly-dramatic otome games. Thought it might be worth mentioning that this game is 50% off on Jast USA’s website (https://www.jastusa.com/yo-jin-bo.html) until the 31st July.

Hi Amy!
Yep I hear you but I’ve discovered so many shows/manga/games that were hidden gems because the art style didn’t appeal at first.
And yessssss ppl need to go get this game.
It’s really fun.

Aww Yo Jin Bo was my first otome game ^^, I think I played it in 2009 and enjoyed it a lot, the art was and still is a bit weird for my taste but it was a fun game. I remember having to play it so many times cause I always died! until I found a walkthrough :_D
My favorite was Ittosai, I really liked his ending! and I can still remember him screaming Sayooooooriiiii xDD

Yeah I agree with you on the art. Those yaoi faces…

This game ported to PS2. The ninja guy and his boss has route (I couldn’t remember these two names because the last time I play this game it was 6 years ago)

I played it for Yo and then never touched it again. That was a really really long time ago. I thought the game was totally stupid cuz I didn’t see any warnings that it was a comedy and lots of things were out of context. Back then I was looking for a real fu@%ing romance game for girls and was so disappointed.
I was so angry. You know why Hirameki failed? one reason was they had no goddamn idea what girls and “all ages” people wanted to play, and the concept of a visual novel was so unknown. Their DVD games were so badly ported too, and they didn’t give us the ps2 ver. Them and JAST USA failed us girls (Jast only knew how to bring hentai for guys overseas.) Two prison rape yaoi games, and just one game where the girl gets the guys but it turned out to be a fricking joke. Back then, a lot of people were crying for a game with fluffy cuddly and mostly serious love, between two bishies or a girl and a boy . hell, no one ever said the word “otome”. almost no one knew that word.
it felt like all the dumb male-dominated localizing companies only brought games they thought they themselves would play, not what girls wanted. cuz romance and feelings are dumb. it needs to be hardcore somehow.
sorry this is like a rant, but I brought forth some old perspectives to give you an idea of what it was like back then. I’m much more positive now that we’ve seen a lot of great releases in the visual novel genre as a whole. : )
Also when I got a a little older I played one of the “stupid yaoi rape games” and like it a lot. but… I don’t think I like it anymore lol. I’m like, oh god why was I into this?! xD the old memory of playing is good, but its just too weird trying it again now. i blame life experience and new perspectives.
There is a reason Hakuouki was a phenomenon both here and in Japan. It changed things for the better.

I ended up playing hentai games cuz there was nothing else lol. I recall rumors that there were novels without sex but it was off in some distant magical land. Clannad and Tokimeki were some strange words I saw somewhere but I couldn’t really find any information about them. and now like 15 years later everyone knows what Clannad is! wtf! xD
So yeah, this whole new otome community is something I thought would never ever happen. I mean, hell. no one talked about things like FB and tumblr and wordpress and Youtube. so it was literally unimaginable. wow i’m old.

ROFL I think we all feel old.
I didn’t get into hentai games because I honestly didn’t know about that and I was lucky enough to have a friend who got me into Harvest Moon and Tales of the Abyss-and then I started frantically searching for ANYTHING with a romantic subplot in some game that was based on trust, respect, and mutual feelings instead of boning each other all the time.
And then I found Hinano’s blog and I stalked that site for a few years before I could afford gaming systems and I’m never turning back.
The one thing that I also hopes changes is when otome games are no longer berated or accused of being “games for fujoshi or lonely women” because NO.
It blows my mind that people are so shocked after playing Code or Nameless to discover that it wasn’t all cute and romantic-there are actual storylines and most of the time the romance takes a back seat.
A good story is a good story, and romance is just something that happens to be a big part of our lives.
And I’m a huge romantic so 😛

😀 yeah, there’s definitely some bad opinions like that, about these games being not cool enough and stuff. but as time goes on I see more and more support for the genre, and its really great. the people close to me in real life don’t think the games are bad either, so that really helps (especially since my room is covered in otoge and some anime stuff lol.)
I will probably play Yojinbo again now that I could go for a comedy since I finally got the otoge I wanted to play. It was kind of in the back of my mind, but hearing something positive about it makes me want to give it another go. (that and its been so long I almost forgot it existed.) Depite my disappointment at the time, I still remember Yo’s character fondly.
Haha, I wanted to play Harvest Moon when that came out but I didn’t have a Gamecube X’D. but I totally did the same thing, looked for games (and books) that were about adventure but had a romantic subplot. Trying to win over a boy or girl is a huge motivator.
And thanks to blogs, us huge romantics can unite! ^_^b

And that’s awesome that you see so much support!
Haha well I hope you like the game this time around and just keep in mind that it’s super dumb and not supposed to be serious at all 😛

No, feel free to rant don’t worry. I completely agree. I only discovered otoge through Harvest Moon-and srsly, guys need to CHILL about games.
They constantly whine about how they wish their gf would play games but if it’s not the games THEY want them to play they act like their dicks have shrunk or smt (rofl sorry for that, super angry about this too)
And yeah, this game def wasn’t supposed to be serious 😉
I think it finally is starting to change for the better because Kenka won, we got Code and Norn recently, and now some company’s are beginning to consider this for a market now.
And agreed on Hakuoki.

This game is fun. But it was released at a wrong time when people had no idea about a visual novel or otome game. After that, Hirameki went bankrupt and Two – Five didn’t make game anymore. Two-Five only work on drama CD now, their drama CD is kind of interesting. You should try it!

Very true, but then again, what was the “right time” to introduce otome visual novels anyways? 🙂
Haha oh yea, I def am starting to get into drama cds 😉

I honestly can’t remember if Yo-jin-bo was my first otome or Hakuouki 😆 It’s sad that this game is so underrated…when it’s so freaking funny!! I laughed lots when playing it, it’s great!! Only did Yo’s route (for some reason, I couldn’t start another path because he always caught my heart x’DDD) but I really want to give Jin’s and Ittosai’s routes a try 😀 As for the ossans, I don’t really care much about them; Monmon is a bit weird and Muneshige should be with Hatsuhime!!
I actually liked Saori, but I agree that sometimes she was a bit too “timid and fragile”…something that, pitifully, is very recurrent in otome game heroines. What’s even more irritating is the fact that shy women are always portrayed the same way, like, why do they have to make them EXTREMELY INNOCENT AND DUMB. Being shy doesn’t make you automatically innocent and weak; you can be shy yet very intelligent and perceptive. *Sigh*, luckily, it’s changing little by little…but it’s quite tiring to spot these type of heroines everywhere
Great review, Leafy!!! 🙂

Omaghad otometantei, exactly!!!
Shy doesn’t = dumb and innocent
Lol yeah you can skip the ones you want in this game cuz really there isn’t a big “plot” to uncover.
And awww thank you!!
Sorry for not being too active on word-after my test on Tuesday I should be participating more often on here ^^ Hope things are doign well with you!

Thank gawd, haha, then I’ll skip the ossans!! xD
And yeah!! I actually would love to see a shy heroine that isn’t innocent and stupid; that would be a real challenge, alright!!
Also, no prob!! Hope things are going well for you too!! 😀

Haha yea don’t worry about skipping them rofl
And hmmm I think the heroine from Shinobi Koi Utsutsu would be a good example of a shy but smart and kickass girl.

Not too bad tbh. It’s mostly a few ninja terms in high school rofl
Though the prologue is really difficult but fear not because Dirillli has a video with the translations for it. So you can see if you want to get the game cuz she’s not doing the whole thing:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRwpOWoVPjI&list=PLpOqmZipnVWLg0QU6xtZvJ_rM2Zr3bTZ-
She also has TONS of other otoge translated on there.

Oh noooooooooo
Well hopefully her other vids are still up. If not I can help with translations if you pick up an import. Really, you have to start somewhere. If you say you’ll get a game after you learn Japanese (or after a year or so) you’ll never get there cuz you don’t think you have what it takes. Trust me, you can actually learn as you’re playing. ^^
Going to be adding more posts soon to my Learning Japanese section with examples, how to self-study vs classroom, etc. Hope you enjoy them!!

That’d be very helpful, thank you!! And you’re absolutely right, I also think playing the games while you learn is a good way to improve 🙂 The only one I bought so far is Kenka Banchou Otome hehe 😆 I was wondering what other otome game I could buy from the PS store 🙂

Haha not at all!
Actually, the games by Petit Reve are pretty easy for beginners: Soukai Buccaneers!, Goes! and SA-7.
Soukai was ok for me, but I did think the pirate terminology was a little difficult. Goes is voiced all by women but it’s still an otome game set in a Hogwarts like setting (though I think Wand of Fortune is better, and the remake is on Vita). And SA-7 is like undercover agents though I heard the romance was kind of meh.
The language used for the most part is much easier than most otoge from what I hear and what I’ve played.
If you’re not interested, than I HIGHLY would recommend you try Kyoukai no Shirayukihime or Beast Master and Prince for the Vita.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions, Leafy!! Hmm, I think I’ll go with Kyoukai no Shirayukihime, I was really interested in that game when it came out (the art is so awesome!!!). It’s CERO C, hope it’s not too difficult but I’ll give it a try, hehe 😆 Beast Master and Prince is another game I definitely want to play sometime; it’s such a bummer that the kickstarter failed…hopefully they reconsider
the game looks so good…

Aww np 🙂
It was really difficult for me trying to get ppl to recommend stuff for a beginner because these are intended for high schooler’s so they know a ton of kanji.
Still, they won’t be easy cuz it’s a whole new language but I was honestly surprised with how quickly I was able to understand Kyoukai and Beast Master. Just don’t be shy to skip passages because if you try and translate everything you’ll burn out and never pick it up again 😦
Plus, Hinano reviewed those two games so if you’re ever confused, she’s got u covered! XD
And yea prolly not gonna happen bc so many ppl who didn’t vote said it was bc “they wanted a vita port” which would’ve been too expensve to do….

I see! That’s good advice, yeah, my sensei also told me understanding the context of the situation helps a lot when learning japanese 😀 I’m so glad I watch so much anime 😆
I see…that’s really sad, maybe another company may consider it…or then again, maybe I should just play it instead of hoping lol. At least a lot of titles are being translated; especially Collar x Malice, the one I’m craving most hehe ❤ 🙂

Haha for sure! I do have to caution you against the anime tho. I watched a ton of it too and yes, it helps, but honestly, there’s a TON of made up language in anime. Actually learning from a text does wonders, but I won’t deny that anime can help. Just don’t rely on that 😛
And yes at least we’re getting that!!! XD Hope this trend continues and we get more announcements next year ^^
